Eve Hall has worked in Marketing and Editorial at Penguin Random House and Hachette, all the way from assistant to Editorial Director level. She is also a traditionally published author and was previously a lecturer in Publishing at Oxford Brookes University.

Are you a writer who wants to better understand what happens behind the curtain? Maybe in order to help you break-in, or else to make you feel more confident when meeting your publisher? It’s an industry shrouded in secrecy and can be confusing from the outside, so get in touch.

School & University leavers

Are you about to editor the world of work and think publishing might be for you? It’s a notoriously difficult industry to enter - an entry-level editorial position at a Big Five publisher will have around 700 applicants. Set yourself apart by learning the ins and outs of the industry and getting some skills on your CV.

Course Structure

  • Learn about the publishing landscape, the major players and formats, and get the low down on everything that is to come.

  • We’ll dive into the role of the editor, what they do day to day, how they commission books, salary expectations, and more.

  • We’ll discuss the editing process in detail, explaining the structural, line, copyediting and proofreading stages.

    We’ll discuss structural and line editing in more detail, including giving you some instruction on what to look for when editing and how to get this across to authors.

  • A literary agent from a top agency will talk to us about their job during this lesson. We’ll also discuss the role of the agent in the submission, acquisition and publishing process.

  • We’ll discuss how marketers and publicists get the word out there about new books and what they do to create bestsellers.

  • Always judge a book by its cover! We’ll unveil the conversations behind the cover design process and what happens to turn a manuscript into a book.

  • We’ll take a look at how the rights team sell books all over the world, and well as discuss the all-important financial side of publishing.

  • From literary prize winners to blockbuster thrillers, hardbacks to ebooks, the sales teams have tactics. We’ll discuss the sales process as well as the different channels and how to reach them.

  • Book a time in with me to go through any questions you may have about the industry, your career, or what to do next.

Costs

The whole four-and-a-half-week course, including a one-to-one discussion with Eve over a video call, costs £295.

This includes eight lessons (two per week), one private Zoom call with Eve to answer any questions, optional assignments, access to our publishing Slack channels with your classmates, and a course completion certificate.

Lessons will be recorded, so if you miss one you can catch up at your leisure.

The average cost of a Masters degree in Publishing is £12,700 - and that’s just the tuition.
